Fantasy Football Draft #4

This was the craziest draft I have done so far. It was a 12 team league with a total of 19 roster slots, 15 of which start. Those 15 slots are as follows: QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, TE, W/T, W/R, R/W/T, R/W/T, R/W/T, K, DEF-ST. This only leaves 4 bench players, which means an eye on bye weeks was more important than ever.

With this stragegy, I managed to only have one trouble week (week 8 with 4 byes), but decided to do some strange things. I only drafted 1 QB, and drafted 4 TE within my first 10 picks (I've done multiple drafts taking my TE after the 10th round).

BTW - It is a 1.5 PPR, 7 point RB TD scoring league.

So, here is what I came out with... Notice the yuck at RB.

QB - Matt Schaub
RB - Matt Forte
RB - Chester Taylor
WR - Roddy White
WR - Wes Welker
WR - Kevin Walter
TE - Dallas Clark
TE - Antonio Gates
W/T - Chris Cooley
W/R - Laurence Maroney
R/W/T - Zach Miller
R/W/T - Ricky Williams
R/W/T - Kevin Faulk
DEF/ST - Seahawks
K - Nate Keading

BENCH:

B1 - (RB) Justin Fargas
B2 - (RB) Brandon Jackson
B3 - (WR) Bryant Johnson
B4 - (WR) Steve Smith

Jozy Altidore's Highlights for Hull City vs. Bolton

Jozy Altidore with amazing assist with first touch in debut for Hull City

In the 60th minute, teen phenom and top forward for the US Men's National Team entered the game for Hull City for is debut in The English Premier League. He jogged out to chants of U-S-A, U-S-A from the crowd. This was a great change from last year when Altidore quickly saw his move to Valencia turn into a season long loan after only a few matches.

Jozy strode onto the field and took his position just outside of the box as his keeper launched the ball down the field. Headers went back and forth a few times and the ball eventually ended up heading in Altidore's direction. He took a deft touch with his chest, followed by a 3/4 bicycle kick up into the air, over his defender, and then over the defender of midfielder Kamel Ghilas. The ball landed directly in the path of the speedy player, who took one touch before burying the ball in the back of the net to give them a 1-0 lead.

Hull had only managed three wins as they fended off relegation last year and a win over Bolton was a great way to continue the trend. However, it wasn't over yet. Bolton had had many more and better chances including multiple barrages of corners. However, Hull held firm and 10 minutes later, Altidore's dreams nearly came true. He won the ball around midfield and passed out to the near side of the field. He turned and ran towards goal. Another attacking player took the attention of the only other defender back and Altidore was left all alone with a ball coming in.

He took one touch, a very good one and on the volley lifted the ball over the keeper's left shoulder towards the far side of the net. However, the shot bounced and went a foot or two wide, leaving Altidore one his knees, covering his head.

He had a few other touches in the game, some good, some not quite so much. He lost the ball attempting a step over from the right side of the box and missed out on a chance to center the ball again to Ghilas. However, he also did well winning possession at midfield late in the game from a larger defender and bringing the ball in for attack.

Overall it was a great start for Jozy Altidore who seemed to immediately raise the pace and level of play of Hull. He was able to get his debut out of the way and work out some first game jitters. This could be a sign of great things to come from the favorite of many Americans, Altidore in his new venture in England.

And oh, by the way, Hull did hold on to a 1-0 victory and in a league where the bottom of the table should be pretty even between at least a handful of teams, it only takes a few wins here and there to lock in your stay for another year.

NFL Preseason, Week 2 - Falcons vs. Rams

In this ones, the Falcons jumped out quickly with efficent passing by Ryan and a big run from Turner. After this the game settled down into mediocrity and Atlanta eventually held on to win 20-13.

Fantasy Football Draft #3

This draft I had starting half an hour after my other one. Luckily the other one only had a few picks left when this one started and they only overlapped once. The leagues are pretty much the same setup-wise with the biggest difference being that this one had 12 teams, making filling the spots much more difficult. A small bench of 5 would also make things difficult... not to mention my #12 pick.

I started with my #12 pick having 3 of the top 4 WR available. Therefore, I went Andre Johnson and Randy Moss. With the league being very reliant on RBs I went with four straight after this with Kevin Smith, Derrick Ward, Cedric Benson, and Willie Parker. I lucked up in the seventh when Matt Schaub fell to me at QB and I picked up Kevin Walter as my first back up WR. I went double RB again after this with Donald Brown and Ray Rice. I then picked up my last offensive starter in Jeremy Shockey and my backup QB with David Gerrard. I then picked up Nate Washington as my second backup WR and the Green Bay Packers Defense. With my final pick, I took kicker

This gives me the following by position.

QB - Matt Schaub
RB - Kevin Smith
RB - Derrick Ward
WR - Andre Johnson
WR - Randy Moss
TE - Jeremy Shockey
W/R - Cedric Benson
W/R - Willie Parker
K -Neil Rackers
DEF - Packers

Bench:

QB - David Gerrard
RB - Donald Brown
RB - Ray Rice
WR - Kevin Walter
WR - Nate Washington

Fantasy Football Draft #2

My second fantasy football draft this year was a big player, small team league with the ability to start QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, W/R, W/R, K, and DEF/ST. It was an 8 team league, which made filling out the slots pretty easy. I had the #3 pick. I ended up with a much better QB than I expected, but lower TE since with a large bench, some took 2. Listed below are my players by draft order, then players by position.

1. Matt Forte
2. Andre Johnson
3. Calvin Johnson
4. Anquon Boldin
5. Ryan Grant
6. Aaron Rodgers
7. Darren McFadden
8. Larry Johnson
9. Cedric Benson
10. Anthony Gonzalez
11. Jamal Lewis
12. Bernard Berrian
13. Ray Rice
14. Donald Brown
15. David Gerrard
16. Bears Def/ST
17. Dustin Keller
18. David Akers

By Position

QB - Aaron Rodgers
RB - Matt Forte
RB - Ryan Grant
WR - Andre Johnson
WR - Calvin Johnson
WR - Anquon Boldin

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in 2010

I just don't know what to think about this one yet. I love the idea of Tim Burton doing an Alice in Wonderland movie, espcially with a cast like Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Alan Rickman, Crispin Glover, and Christopher Lee. Add in a little known Mia Wasikowska and a brand new story and this could be great. However, the teaser didn't really get me pumped for it.

It looks like an odd mix of CGI and Live Action, but doesn't look all that dark from the preview. It apppears that the film version of American McGee's Alice is now completely on hold :(

Here are a few images from the film of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Queen of Hearts and Mia Wasikowska as Alice.

Beautiful Girls That Catch My Eye #6: Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger makes the list due to her recent role as Bridget von Hammersmark in Inglourious Basterds. Not only does her beauty, elegance, and grace make me melt as I watch her, but she also gets to kill a Nazi and hold up under torture by Brad Pitt.

I first saw her in Troy as who else but Helen. I was looking for a boat, just so I could launch it. Then came her role in Wicker Park a very underappreciated film that she shone in. Her true breakthrough, though came as Nicholas Cage's love interested Abigail Chase in National Treasure and it's crap sequal. Now she is back as a beatiful and charasmatic starlet in Inglourious Basterds. Here's hoping to see more of her soon.

NFL Preseason, Week 2 - Vikings vs. Chiefs

On the Chief's first possession Jamal Charles sees allot of open space on the left, but after only a couple of yards is takled well by the air, which also happens to force a fumble, which is recovered by the Vikings.

Favre starts for the Vikings and takes a hit on his second snap. He then fires a bullet on third down to Percy Harvin between two defenders.

After a field goal by the Chiefs, Favre comes out again for the Vikings and doesn't look very good. His timing is still well off and he takes another big hit. With two series down, he is out for the remainder of the game as was planned from the beginning. He is not hurt, but is not up to speed enough to be able to gain much more from the game.

Tavaris Jackson continues to show his "ability" when he scrables 5 yards past the line of scrimmage before heaving a ball down the field for a big play... which would be fine... say... if we didn't have any rules. I really thought that he had a chance to be a good player two years ago, but he just hasn't seemed to get any better since then.

Minnesota's defense has looked great at times tonight. Brodie Croyle has actually looked decent this preseason so far.

Allot of hype for Favre, but the Vikings defense was really the star here.

Basterds heats up at times, but never catches fire

Inglorious Basterds

All I knew coming into this film was what I had seen from the previews, which weren’t very good. It looked like it would probably be some sort of super cheesy action/comedy that some would love and others would loathe as with most Tarantino films.

I have loved many of his films and therefore, even though the previews were not thrilling me, I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and check out Inglourious Basterds.

Many of the movies charms as well as its faults could be found in the opening chapter where a Frenchman is questioned by an SS officer dubbed “The Jew Hunter” about some of his Jewish neighbors who had gone missing during the German occupation of the country. Here we see some great cinematography, shot setups, and interesting music. However, the very much real feeling story that is unfolding is occasionally hijacked by an odd addition such as the officer’s abnormally large pipe.

The other big thing that stuck out here was that I felt myself waiting for all hell to break loose at any moment. Would it be the father snapping and taking out the officer? Would he then open the door to show the carnage done by his daughters on the other soldiers? Would his eldest daughter, who seemed ready to make her move at any moment go crazy on the German’s Rambo style?

No to all of these.

We are then introduced to the Inglorious Basterds or just Basterds as they are referred to for most of the film. The Basterds are a group of American Jews along with a couple Germans who have flipped sides.

They are led by Lt. Aldo Raines (Brad Pitt) who plays a southern officer who wants just wants to kill “Nat-zis”. He explains to the group that they will be unorthodox and will use Apache style hit and run tactics along with a healthy mix of brutality and mutilation to both cow and enrage the Germans.

He tells his men that they all owe him a ‘’debit” of 100 “Nat-zi “ scalps to pay off the position that he has given them. They are immediately sent to France where they quickly make a name for themselves as they successfully kill and mutilate many Germans.

During one such attack, they end with three captives. Aldo explains to the officer that he has two choices: die, or live and tell them of the other “Nat-zi” soldiers in the area. He refuses to give up their locations and therefore, “The Bear Jew” (Eli Roth) is called in to loosen his tongue.

This is one of their group that is feared throughout the Nazi ranks for his extreme brutality. Even Hitler is aware of his reputation and tries to keep it from spreading. He gives the officer one last chance to talk. When he refuses, The Bear Jew beats him to death with a baseball bat.

We are then introduced to a British soldier with knowledge of the German film industry who is being used in a mission involving a German starlet Bridget von Hammersmark to take out some of the top brass of the Nazi party.

They join up with The Basterds in a bar where they will find out about von Hammersmark’s plan. However, things don’t go as planned and a few of the group are killed. This leaves Aldo with a couple of his men filing in to attend the premiere of a movie claimed to be the best of the Nazi propaganda films at a French cinema.

This cinema is owned by a young woman that we had seen earlier in the film and who has reason to truly hate the Nazi’s. She has a young Nazi man take a liking to her, who later turns out to be the star of the new film. She is forced into a lunch with him and head of propaganda Joseph Goebbels.

She quickly decides that if the brass will be using her theater that she and her husband must do something about it. They hatch a plan to take care of the Nazi command once and for all not realizing that The Basterds are doing the same.

This was a difficult movie to rate upon its completion. I knew that it wasn’t a great film in any way, but it wasn’t a terrible one either. I had a positive feeling about it due to great pacing and a fun script, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized how many flaws it had.

One of the things that stood out to me the most was the fact that the film was really not that over the top. Take out a couple of scenes and a couple of little moments and you would not have been able to convince me that it was in fact a Tarantino film.

This was disappointing as you expect certain things from directors such as Tarantino and when you don’t get them it is always a bit of a letdown. To a greater extent, though, the problem was that there were so few of these scenes that when they did happen, they seemed out of place.

Some of these were The Jew Hunter pulling out an abnormally large pipe in the first chapter. Another was having Mike Myers as a British officer that briefs the agent going undercover. He seems to want to so badly slip into an Austin Power’s movie like character that he barely keeps in check. He is only on screen for about five minutes, but he pulls you right out of the film in this time.

As I mentioned earlier, one of its strengths were its pacing, making it seem more like an hour and a half film than and two and a half hour film. However, these moments would bring you out of that groove and deflate the buildup.

Other than Myers, though, most of the actors did really well in their roles. Diane Kruger melded into her role as German starlet turned Allies spy Bridget von Hammersmark. Eli Roth was great as The Bear Jew. Melanie Laurent was captivating as theater owner Shosanna Dreyfus. Even the overplayed Brad Pitt as Aldo Raines and Christoph Waltz as The Jew Hunter worked for the film and worked well as counterparts.

Overall the acting was very good, the eclectic music was good, and the cinematography was good (especially in the first chapter). However, the story wasn’t very good and the dialog was not nearly up to the normal Tarantino standard.

I found myself really wanting to love this film as the First Chapter played out, but with so many opportunities for Tarantino to do what he does best, it seemed to just keep going and going as you anticipated it. It wasn’t a bad journey along the way, but in the end, it really needed some of his magic to make it memorable.

There will be a few scenes that will be remembered from this film, but overall the film will quickly leave the public eye.

I still enjoyed the film, but do not seem myself ever seeing it again, which I don’t think I can say of any of his other films, which is a shame. There were plenty of positives and negatives, and in the end, I give Inglourious Bastards a 6.

NFL Preseason, Week 2 - Cowboys vs. Titans

It is great to see the numerous great plays that you can see even here in the second week of the preseason. In the previous game I saw a Bengals receiver make an amazing layout one handed catch in the endzone... too bad he pushed off first and it came back.

In this one, Romo threw a beautiful pass while scrambling to Jason Whitten leading to their first TD and Hurd making a one handed catch with a pass behind him, was hit, the ball popped slightly free, he got it back with that hand, and tucked hit home while being hit again.

The first half was one of the most lopsided I've ever seen with Dallas dominating, racking up around 25 minutes time of possession against 5 for Tennessee. Despite this, it took a length of the field TD drive (led by a long catch and run by Felix Jones) by Dallas ending with 1 second left to take a 14-10 lead at the half.

Romo looked good in his full half of play as did the Barbarian and Felix Jones. Roy Williams really stood out in this one with good hands and effort. He could really stand out this year if he keeps this up.

The Titans offense looked bad and it really stood out that Kerry Collins isn't going to go out and win too many games again this year for the Titans. He's a game manager and when someone is able to stuff the running game, their offense stagnates. However, the one shining light for Tennessee was the solid play of Javon Ringer, their rookie running back who has continued to impress in the preseason.

As the game wore on in the second half, it was much of the same with the Titans going three and out due to the again woeful play of Vince Young and Dallas dominated the game. Kitna showed that he is a huge improvement behind Romo than what killed them last season, but he is a gunslinger who will have extreme highs and lows.

Where Felix Jones continues to play out of his mind both rushing and receiving, Tashard Choice slipped as he was one of the few Dallas offensive players that did not have a good showing in this one.

A great little pitch and catch there between Kitna and Ogletree for a TD in the 4th quarter on a one handed over the shoulder one handed catch and double toe tap. Another very nice play.

Geez, you keep hearing from the Titans that Vince Young is their QB of the future, but he flat out stinks. I can't see any way that he makes the team next year unless he renegotiates his contract down big time. What else is he going to do, though, nobody else will want him.

People have been really building their stiff arm skills. I saw Chad Ochocinco throw out some great stiff arms the last two weeks. Felix Jones did one earlier and their #4 back Lattimore just dropped someone to the ground with one.

Surprise, surprise, Vince Young just threw a pick. The surprising part was that it wasn't really his fault as the ball got tipped and a LB snatched it up.

That was hilarious. First play after the turnover and the Cowboy's 3rd string QB throws a bullet off of his WR's facemask that shoots up into the air. Two Titans go up for it together and as they hit the ground, the TE throws a shoulder into each. The ball falls forward from their hands into the hands of the receiver it was originally intended for... for a 9 yard gain.

Trying to see if they can 1 up their previously terrible play, Patrick Ramsey, QB for the Titans takes a safety on his first play.

I think right now if you were to put a uniform on me the stupid announcers would claim that from the moment I came in the league that thought I would make a good QB and that they think that at some point down the road I will become a quality QB in the league. It's like they are dolls with the pull string and spout the same gibberish over and over again. BTW - I will get no questions to this claim from my friend Kurt who hates one of these announcers, good ole' Troy Aikmen.

In the end, Dallas doubled the Titans TOP at 41 to 19 and total yards were even more lopsided at 466 to 191 in their 30-10 domination. It has been a long time since I've seen a game that was this lopsided.

NFL Preseason, Week 2 - Patriots vs. Bengals

Tom Brady looked flat. He had a few bad throws and never got in a rhythym like he did last week against the Eagles. Not a whole lot of offense on either side. Cedric Benson again looked average, but for a second straight week Chad Ochocinco looked sharp, good routes, speed, and escapability.

One big surprise here was when the Bengals scored their TD, their kicker couldn't go, so they put Ochocinco out there to kick the extra point, which he did. Then, after the punter didn't do well in the following kickoff, they put Ochocinco out there to kickoff at the beginning of the second half, which he got inside the 10. It was flat, not allot of hangtime, but he looks like in a pinch, he could do it in the regular season. I assume you would get the fantasy points for it if he has to during the season...lol.

NFL Preseason, Week 2 - Colts vs. Eagles

Peyton Manning looked really good in this one. He had a few off target and Anthony Gonzalez played defense on those pretty well to break up possible interceptions.

Not long after, the pair hooked up on a nice post corner route in the end zone, which was thrown before Gonzalez even started his cut.

Not a whole lot more of note here except that McNabb didn't seem really focused. He seemed to be merely going through the motions.

Top 15 Movies that have stuck with me: (as seen on Facebook)

  1. Memento – I have never seen a movie that I was so engrossed in trying to figure out and after which more discussion of the same was had with my friends and I. (Saw at the Capri Theater)
  2. Jurassic Park – This was the first movie that I ever saw with “super sound.” We sat near the front wide eyed at the amazing sound and the awesome movie. (Saw at Carmike Eastdale 8)
  3. Tombstone – The most, great quotes ever in a movie, a cast that kept on giving, and a great story that had lead to many viewings over the years. (Saw on VHS)
  4. Braveheart – Possibly the best movie to me of all time. When I saw his wife’s throat cut for the first time, I was in shock for a few seconds followed by near tears, and then a sudden and ferocious anger. They really made you feel that scene and I love them for it. (Saw on VHS)
  5. Sin City – This was a comic book on film in all the best ways possible. Stylized and gritty, this is all that I wanted out of a movie based off of a GRAPHIC novel and more. (Saw on DVD)
  6. Monty Python and the Holy Grail – This is the movie that made me realize that comedies can be some of the best films. Great comedies are so rare and this one sits at the top… with big, pointy teeth. (Saw on VHS)
  7. Philadelphia Story – My favorite older film. How can you not love a smart and funny film staring Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart? (Saw on VHS)
  8. IT – A movie that terrified me so much as a child that I never watch it in its entirety until I was 17 or 18. (Saw on VHS)
  9. Dead Alive – The only movie that I have seen that made me nauseous. I nearly got sick during the dinner with zombie mom. (Saw on VHS)
  10. Chasing Amy – The way Kevin Smith dealt with relationships with such wit and humor was amazing. (Saw on VHS)
  11. Army of Darkness – My favorite of the series with great humor, dialogue, and fun. (Saw on VHS)
  12. Moulin Rouge – This was the movie that opened me up to musicals. Before this, I avoided them like the plague, but the energy between Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman was electric and I was hooked. (Saw at Rave Motion Pictures)
  13. Jim Henson’s The Bunny Picnic – This was one of my favorite films as a child and one which I still cherish today. It is a shame that this is a mostly hidden gem that many have not seen. (Saw on bootleg VHS)
  14. The Matrix – There was one point not long after this movie came out on VHS when I watched it at least once a day for a month and never got tired of it. The crazy thing was that I watched it for the first time in the theater, the third movie in a block with Go and Ten Things I hate About You and I actually didn’t enjoy it all that much. (Saw at Carmike Wynsong 10)
  15. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – This is the film that showed the world that fantasy films can legitimately be some of the best films of all time. The story, acting, sound, effects, everything came together to make an amazing film. (Saw at Promenade Cinema 12)

Name of the Day #1 - Captain Tinklepa

Now, you might imagine as my co-worker did that this was the name of some insane person's cat, but no...oh-no, if only it was that simple.

This apparently is the name of an actual person and Captain is his rank. My co-worker friend looked up the name Tinklepa and found out that it was the Americanization of the German name Dinklebach which was a city or region where the person's family came from.

Favre's Teammate Reactions

Sage Rosenfelds - Seemed disspointed by the signing. (Obviously, he is a backup quarterback who was about to get the starting job on one of the best teams in the league.

Tavaris Jackson - Seemed very down at the news yesterday. (Again, he's getting shipped out after this with Favre starting, newly signed and now backup Rosenfelds backing him up and John David Booty getting groomed for the job down the road)

Today's interviews shows how the recieving core feels after spending training camp with these two and two days with Brett Favre.

Visanthe Shiancoe - Farve is confident, composed, and leading the team, which is contagious. You cuold see the giddiness on his face.

Sidney Rice - He went out on a route, made his cut and expected to wait for the ball coming through the air. Instead, the ball was right on target, hit him in the hands and he could go with it. Another pleased customer.

Rice also stated that they were working on a goalline play when he was overthrown. He heard a big bang as the ball hit the wall and found a hole in the wall where the ball had struck.

Sounds to me like the QB's are upset by the addition of Favre, but the recievers are estatic. I would imagine that the rest of the team probably has the mindset of the best man for the job to lead them to victory and it's obvious who that person is.... Purple Judas.

Purple Judas?

Nice, we now have Purple Judas handing the ball off to Purple Jesus in Minnesota.

Quality Quoatables #4

Chris Collinsworth on Mike and Mike in the morning with Dennis Leary discussing the Philadelphia Eagles chances to win the NFC.

Chris: With all of their injuries I am a bit leery.
Dennis: HEY!!!

Quality Quotables #3

Denis Leary on Michael Vick’s reinstatement to the NFL.

What they should do is dress him up in a meat suit with a bacon football and a bacon helmet and put him on a football field with 75 pit bulls. If he can make it from one end zone to the other, he’s back in.

Quality Quotables #2

Beano Cook and Ivan Maisel discussing an old Army vs. Navy game.

Beano: It was the biggest upset since World War II.
Ivan: What, you’re not calling the result of World War II an upset?
Beano: No, we not only won… we covered.

Quality Quotables #1

This idea was inspired a few years ago by all of the nonsense sayings of Lou Holtz such as "it's like a butterfly on a hot plate." So, here we go.

Ed Hochuli (explaining a roughing the quarterback penalty in preseason) –

Unsportsmanlike conduct…Roughing the Quarterback… Picking up the quarterback and stuffing him into the ground.
