Jozy strode onto the field and took his position just outside of the box as his keeper launched the ball down the field. Headers went back and forth a few times and the ball eventually ended up heading in Altidore's direction. He took a deft touch with his chest, followed by a 3/4 bicycle kick up into the air, over his defender, and then over the defender of midfielder Kamel Ghilas. The ball landed directly in the path of the speedy player, who took one touch before burying the ball in the back of the net to give them a 1-0 lead.
Hull had only managed three wins as they fended off relegation last year and a win over Bolton was a great way to continue the trend. However, it wasn't over yet. Bolton had had many more and better chances including multiple barrages of corners. However, Hull held firm and 10 minutes later, Altidore's dreams nearly came true. He won the ball around midfield and passed out to the near side of the field. He turned and ran towards goal. Another attacking player took the attention of the only other defender back and Altidore was left all alone with a ball coming in.
He took one touch, a very good one and on the volley lifted the ball over the keeper's left shoulder towards the far side of the net. However, the shot bounced and went a foot or two wide, leaving Altidore one his knees, covering his head.
He had a few other touches in the game, some good, some not quite so much. He lost the ball attempting a step over from the right side of the box and missed out on a chance to center the ball again to Ghilas. However, he also did well winning possession at midfield late in the game from a larger defender and bringing the ball in for attack.
Overall it was a great start for Jozy Altidore who seemed to immediately raise the pace and level of play of Hull. He was able to get his debut out of the way and work out some first game jitters. This could be a sign of great things to come from the favorite of many Americans, Altidore in his new venture in England.
And oh, by the way, Hull did hold on to a 1-0 victory and in a league where the bottom of the table should be pretty even between at least a handful of teams, it only takes a few wins here and there to lock in your stay for another year.
