According to the journal Science, in the biggest study of its kind, for the first time, second to eleventh grade girls now test just as well in Math as boys.
Apparently, the sterotype is still being used by many that girls cannot keep up with boys in regards to Math, which still keeps some girls away from the upper level classes, however, girls are now earning 48% of the Math undergraduate degrees although still much further behind in Physics and Engineering degrees. Apparently older studies showed girls on par with boys in math in elementary school, but falling behind in high school. One thing that seems to be adding to this trend is more girls overall attending college.
This was personally something that I saw a bit of in high school where there would be a handful of males and females that would truly excel in math through Jr. High, but in high school even many of the most intelligent girls in our class still seemed to have some problems keeping up.
However, I always laughed at the old talk of girls just not being able to learn math normally, especially those who would go back to ancient lunacy of girls having smaller brains and not being as smart generally.
I think that as women are now more than ever able to choose any path that they want for careers and how to lead their lives in general we will continue to see more and more of this. Could this also be a correlation with the rise of the femal geek (in my opinion a truely great thing)?
