Peoria pitcher charged

Two Videos - The first is from Sports Center. The second is a longer uncut fan home video of the incident.

As many of you have now seen, in a Class A minor league baseball game between the Chicago Cubs affiliate Peoria Chiefs and Cincinnatti Reds affilliate Dayton Dragons, a fight broke out that appears to so far be the craziest minor league baseball story of the season.

This all started on Wednesday when three Peoria players were beaned. In the first inning of the Thursday game, another Peoria player was hit. So, in the second, Peoria fought back by hitting two Dayton players, including one in the head. The second hit batter for Dayton then made an aggressive slide into second to break up a double play and therefore, the next pitch up and in.

The Dayton manager had enough by this point and came out to argue. After a minute, the stand in manger for Peoria, in due to Ryne Sandberg's trip to Cooperstown, came in to take up for his team. At this time, the two managers began to argue and as the exchange became more heated, the umpires stepped back and the Peoria manager pushed the Dayton manager.

At this point, both dugouts cleared and players began attacking each other. One of the first players on the scene was the Peoria pitcher who had just hit to batters. As he arrived, he threw the baseball he was holding in the area of the Dayton dugout. However, his aim was wild and the ball ended up smacking into the forehead of a fan near the dugout who was dazed after incident and sent to a nearby hospital.

The man was released the same night, but the warrant quickly went out for the thrower of the ball, Julio Castillo who had only been in the states for a month from his native Dominican Republic. He was being held on $50,000 bail and if convicted of his charges could face up to $15,000 in fines and 8 years in prison.

17 people were ejected from the game, but after pleas for a temporary stay of the ejections to keep pitchers from being forced into playing outfield positions, the game continued and was eventually finished.

Officials are currently reviewing data to decided what sorts of fines and suspensions should be handed down to the two teams.
