I don’t have any statistics to prove this, but I think that it is. This probably also differs depending on the part of the country, but I think that baseball has dipped down over the past 5-10 years and football has taken its place. These days, people can see at least 5 NFL games a week along with dozens of NCAA football games making them more readily viewable than ever before, whereas baseball seems to have hit a barrier with about a handful of games a week apart from local channels that play the games of your closest team.
Also, football is much more interesting than baseball and is much easier to get excited about on a daily bases due to its shorter, compact season.
I think that not only is football the new national pastime, but also pulling away from baseball every season. Personally, I have found myself watching more and more football every year while watching less and less baseball.
I would be interested in hearing the responses of others on this topic as I’m sure that this is a very personal feeling, I just think that the tides have turned.
